How do Dynamic Movement Orthoses work?
Our orthoses work using strategically placed panelling which correctly aligns the body. This new positioning stimulates sensory systems throughout the body and re-programmes the brain, ensuring that muscles operate in their new state of optimal alignment.
Our orthoses use a unique Lycra® blend designed to give the best combination of flexibility and comfort, enabling freedom of movement.
In addition to this we use reinforcement panelling to provide strength and stability where needed, realigning areas of the body so that muscles work in the correct way.
Why do I have an Orthosis?
Usually they are provided to help improve your posture and balance and/ or function. Your physiotherapist/ Occupational therapist will be able to give you more information on this.
Will I still need to do my physiotherapy exercises?
Yes. The Orthosis will work alongside your therapy programme given by your therapist.
How long will I have to wear my Orthosis for?
You should build up wearing time gradually until you are wearing it all day (follow the guidelines in the wearing instructions).
The length of time you will have an Orthosis will be determined by your diagnosis and your goals. You will be reassessed by your therapist but it is usual to wear your Orthosis for several years.
What do I do if my Orthosis becomes really tight?
What if my Orthosis develops ladders and holes?
What if areas of my Orthosis wear out?
The Orthosis is designed to improve your function. As a result of this, certain areas may wear away more quickly than others. For example, if you have been given a glove to improve hand function. You may start to use your hand more and in doing so you may find wear on the thumb and/or the palm. This may need repair before the rest of the glove wears out. For heavy use such as transfers and wheelchair propelling, we advise you to wear ordinary gloves over your Orthosis.
If you have been given a sock to improve your walking pattern, you may need the heel repairing before the rest of the sock. Wearing ordinary socks over your Orthosis may limit this wear.
How long will my Orthosis last?
In children, generally growth will decide when an Orthosis needs alteration or replacing.
In adults it is more likely to be wear and tear through use, which will necessitate repair or replacement. If your weight changes this may lead to your Orthosis needing to be altered or replaced.
My Orthosis is becoming loose, why?
Do's and Don'ts
Put the Orthosis on as instructed following the instruction leaflet provided
Take care when putting on –pulling on roughly and long nails will cause damage
Build up wear time as per individual instructions
Wash at least every 2 to 3 days
Follow the washing instructions carefully
Contact your therapist if concerned about fit of the Orthosis
Do not tumble dry the Orthosis it WILL shrink and damage the material
Do not wring out the Orthosis it will cause damage to the material
Do not wear at night (unless night time positioning shorts)
Do not iron the Orthosis

What are the washing instructions?
Follow the care instructions carefully. By taking care of your Orthosis you will prolong its wear and prevent damage.
Regular and correct care of the Orthosis will prevent it from developing odour and keep the material supple. If your Orthosis is silver treated, this will need to be re-applied after 100 washes as the silver ions start to disperse after 50 washes.
How many hours a day should I wear my Orthosis?
The information sheet issued with your orthosis will explain the programme of wearing. Time of wear is usually increased gradually over the course of a week until you are wearing it throughout the day (nightime wear is only advised for Contour V and some scoliosis suits).
Can I access a toilet easily when wearing a suit or shorts?
Yes, each orthosis is individually tailored to your requirements. Crotch holes are fitted as chosen. For young children, there are a range of fasten options to enable nappy changing with maximum ease.
My child has a gastrostomy fitted, can they still wear a suit?
Yes, we provide openings for these fittings.
