What Should You Consider When Selecting a "Good" Wheelchair Cushion?
This presentation will be available to audience members until Thursday, August 19, 2016 at 06:30am NZT.
How do you determine whether or not a wheelchair cushion is “good” for a specific client? Do you rely on general assumptions, sales and marketing spin, and/or anecdotal effectiveness when choosing one product over another?

This Webinar will instead take a science-of-materials approach to reviewing advantages and limitations of seating products, as well as examine current research. Five critical characteristics of effective wheelchair cushion designs will be presented with evidence to justify their clinical importance regarding skin integrity, stability and positioning. And we’ll discuss research focusing on skin-integrity risks for specific conditions, including spinal cord injury, diabetes, obesity and scar tissue.

Course Objectives:
  • Explain the mechanisms and resulting forces that occur when load is applied to different cushion materials.
  • List 3 different load redistribution methods used in cushion design and construction.
  • List 5 characteristics of effective wheelchair cushion designs.
  • Identify specific risks associated with skin and soft tissue due to spinal cord injuries, diabetes, obesity and scars, and describe an appropriate cushion design solution.
